Pink Eye in Livestock: Causes, Prevention, and Management

Pink eye is a common and highly contagious eye condition that affects many livestock species, particularly cattle, sheep, and goats. While it may begin as a mild irritation, untreated cases can lead to serious discomfort, reduced performance, and even permanent vision damage. Understanding how pink eye develops and how to manage it can help livestock producers protect animal health and maintain productivity.

What is Pink Eye?

Pink eye, medically known as infectious keratoconjunctivitis, is an inflammation of the eye that affects the cornea and surrounding tissues. The condition is most commonly caused by bacteria and can spread rapidly among animals through direct contact, flies, or contaminated equipment.

In cattle, the bacterium Moraxella bovis is one of the primary pathogens responsible for pink eye infections. The bacteria damage the surface of the eye, leading to irritation and inflammation. Environmental stressors such as dust, pollen, tall grass, and ultraviolet (UV) light can increase susceptibility to infection by irritating the eye and creating entry points for bacteria.

Common Symptoms of Pink Eye

If pink eye is detected, early treatment can help reduce severity and prevent complications. Veterinary treatment may include antibiotic injections, medicated eye ointments, or eye patches to protect the eye from sunlight and further irritation.

Producers should work with a veterinarian to determine the best treatment approach for their herd. Quick intervention not only helps the affected animal recover faster but also helps limit the spread of infection.
